What is Web 2.0? There is no really comprehensive definition at this stage. For us at 1000heads, web 2.0 is:
"an [...]

Treading the boards

Share
At last someone with some clout has championed the lowly message board. Steve is bang on. Innovation in board technology has lagged behind that of blogs - even to the extent that blogs are often been asked to do the job a board is better prepared for. Boardtracker is great although boards themselves need to say hi to the [...]

The Economist tunes in

Share
Recent article written in The Economist entitled ‘Listening to the Internet’ provides a comfy introduction to brand reputation tracking online. Here’s an excerpt:
"the direct, unfiltered, brutally honest nature of much online discussion is gold dust to big companies that want to spot trends, or find out what customers really think of them. As a result, [...]

Invasion of the Bodysnatchers

Share
This recent article in the Orlando Times [link broken] is indicative of a concerning view of the WOM marketing industry. It actually sounds more like The Invasion of the Bodysnatchers - the 50’s horror classic where a local community gets infiltrated by alien duplicates. BzzAgent is again the press whipping boy - perhaps unsurprisingly given the company’s current newsworthiness following the substantial VC injection. [...]

Hearing can be worse than experiencing

Share
New research just out of the University of Pennsylvania suggests that hearing about someone else’s bad experiences can be worse than experiencing the problem yourself.
Paula Courtney, head if the Verde Group, who carried out the study on 1,200 US shoppers in the run up to Christmas says:
"This study is unlike anything we’ve seen before because it shows [...]

Forum post leads to conviction

Share
Browsing one of my favourite sites, Pistonheads, I came across an interesting article in the archive. The motorist in question got 240 hours community service for boasting about lying to the police on an internet forum - which the police were monitoring!

Forrester’s social computing study # 2

Share
Having read the report, I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone. Grab it here. The research findings should provide a wakeup call for traditionalists either unconcerned or simply oblivious to what Forrester terms ’social computing’. Here are some topline findings:
1. Value will shift from ownership to experience2. Power will shift from institutions to communities3. Marketers and strategists: [...]

WOM moms

Share
Yes, I know it should really be ‘mum’ but the American way works better for my cheap title.
Interesting study by Kevin from Lucid marketing (carried on The Wombat) on the importance of mums in the word of mouth dynamic. Study says 80% of household spending is controlled by mums - meaning what what they hear, [...]

The Semantic web

Share
A fellow WOMMA attendee (Matt from http://www.thegrandunion.com) sent me a precis of Tim Berners-Lee’s speech at Oxford Uni last night. He spoke of the concept of the Semantic Web  - a new age of the WWW where all data is ordered by a common standard and ‘described’ in a way any application can understand. From the W3C [...]
