What people want from search

By Mike Davison

Interesting polls on the Hakia blog on where people see search improving. The first was;

What do you think a search engine should do? (504 votes)

Perhaps unsurprisingly the abillity of search tools to think in a more human way comes top of the poll with 38% of the votes. The other poll asked;

What ’search 2.0′ concepts you think stand the best chance of beating Google? (625 votes)

People powered search was the second most popular response after some form of AI. Here at 1000heads, our research layer uses a degree of human ordering and interpretation of social media and it is something we feel is a vital element in building understanding of context and sentiment. Subtletly of languages, cutures and interest groups overlayed with the changing social power of venues and voices therein means human understanding plays an important role.

Yahoo’s recent deployments are also a refreshing acknowledgement of this. The rise and rise of social bookmarking is another.
