Funny business of WOM

By Robbie Dale

So, I was watching Mock The Week the other day, when I had a rare moment of clarity. Comedians come in flavours not dissimilar to the varying factions of conversation.

There’s the one-line merchant, rattling off his witty constructs; each gains a laugh, but is soon forgotten. So there’s reaction, but little engagement. Like putting a monkey on a skateboard. Then of course, there’s the observational comic, he (or, indeed she) who takes time to craft a narrative flecked with humour, leading up to the big payoff. The result? Something more memorable, more delicious and more likely to live long in the memory.

Everyone who sees Eddie Izzard knows that the monkey is in the tree, you can’t forget it. That’s conversational – something you keep coming back to time and time again.

Just another analogy to add to the bonfire…
